Well, I am happy to report that Day 1 of my hundred day challenge saw me showered (yes, you're quite welcome) and exercised. My husband was aghast that daily showers had to be on my to-do list, but seriously, getting things done alone with 3 kids, especially with one of them being 2 years old, is sometimes more effort than it's worth.
Laundry was done, dinner was planned out for tonight (we're having meatloaf, baked potatoes and green beans, by the way) and I didn't yell. Not once. Imagine that.
We also sat down as a family at breakfast and came up with our top 5 personal goals for the year and our top 5 family goals, as well. The boys were actually very into it and the 6 year old listed such things as "Learn to read and write better" and "Learn how to play better with my little sister." The 8 year old said he wanted to "Learn how to make cakes and cupcakes" and "Learn how to play the guitar." Even Sweet Pea got in on the list making and said she wanted to "Go potty in the potty." Really. And I didn't even pressure her. Honest! Daddy said he wanted to "Plant a soup garden" and "Grow fruit." As a family we came up with things like "Weekly game nights" and "Read together more." It was a tradition I'd like to continue every year.
Then we played Wii bowling together and I slammed my right index finger into the edge of the computer hutch. My first Wii related injury has left my finger swollen and the Tylenol bottle two pills lighter.
Ouch.

Who Knew I Had No Abdominal Strength? At All!
I'm writing this today as opposed to yesterday, because I had to come home and collapse. Okay, not really, but it was close. Although there were no tape measures in sight it was a sad, sad day at the gym. I came upon the realization that I am indeed way overweight and that I have absolutely NO core strength left after having three kids. This may not come as a shock to you...it certainly hasn't to everyone I've told, but for me, Whoa, Baby! It was a kicker.
How, you may wonder, did I discover this interesting tidbit about my core strength, er, lack of core strength? By falling on my butt. Twice. While doing lunges. Go ahead, conjure up the image. Lunges go forward, knees are bending...yep, that's right. Now imagine that image standing back up. Up, up, feet together, whoa!, topple over backwards and land flat on your bottom. Apparently, balance is closely related to core strength. This I was so nicely informed of by my new personal trainer, Shawn, who not only used to be in the Army, but thinks everyone else should be. At least for the physical training part. So, after falling on my bottom twice (because, really, once was just not humiliating enough), Shawn so sweetly suggests, "Hmm. Well, let's find you an exercise where you can sit down now." Gotta' love him.
The rest of the workout went well, considering the shape I'm in, but boy, was it a wake up call. For 6 years now I've been thinking, "Well, running around with my kids all day is exercise! Who needs a workout program?!" Let me just tell you, all you stay-at-home mamas who are thinking the same thing....you need more. Dancing around the living room with little Johnny is great, but it's not an exercise program. So, Shawn will be working with me once a month (do you know how much personal trainers charge?! I'm SO in the wrong field!!) to gauge my results and help me come up with a plan of attack. I'm sure it won't be pretty at first and I may wind up back on my bottom a few more times, but by the time I see him in May I'm determined to be lunging without falling and have at least a little bit of my core strength back.
For those of you who are interested, yes, I will be spending the majority of my time doing resistance training. I know it burns fat faster and builds muscle quicker. Besides, the more muscle you have the more calories you burn even at rest. Like when you're watching The Biggest Loser with a whole lot more respect!
See ya' on Monday for Day 2 at the gym!

Today's the Day!
Today's the big day! I go to the gym for the first time! If only the sales tour counted - then today would be the second day! But, alas, it doesn't. So, today I go meet with the trainer to devise my plan for achy joints, sore muscles and buckets of sweat. Who knew that would be so exciting?!
I'm a bit nervous too. What if he breaks out a tape measure?! Knowing that 66 lbs. of fat have made themselves at home on my body is bad enough....but measuring where that fat is doesn't seem all that appealing to me. Yes, yes, I know. "If you don't know where you are, how will you be able to track how far you've come?" Can't I guess-timate? Gimme a break - I just had 3 kids! Well, "just" is such a relative word, isn't it? "Just" 4 months ago, "just" 4 years ago, and "just" 6 years ago. But being the good mommy that I am, I've kept momentos from all of those pregnancies...firmly attached to my hips. I'll let you know how the tape measure thing goes, but keep me in your prayers anyway!
So, you may be wondering why I've created this blog. Well, it's here to help chronicle my daily battle with procrastination, avoidance and big thighs. Maybe you can relate? If not, sit back and have a chuckle. I hope you'll be entertained, encouraged and realize that you don't have to be a size 2 or 4 or 6 or 8 to get on a treadmill. Leave me a note to let me know you've stopped by! I'd love to hear from you.
